Understanding Gender, Democracy and Development

8 March 2011 - A workshop was held in Mitchells Plain for Community Development Workers

The key responsibilities of the Community Development Workers is to:
• determine the needs of communities and communicate these needs to the relevant government structures
• promote networks and enhance the activities of existing local community workers aimed at improved service delivery for Government services
• Compile reports and documents as required on progress, issues attended to actions taken and outcomes

Primary Objectives of this workshop
• To help participants understand key gender concepts
• To introduce the Local Government Legislative Framework
• To help participants understand the Role of the Councillor
• Understanding the terms Practical and Strategic Gender Needs
• Understanding Development

Some Comments from Attendees:

• This workshop just reminded me of how we used to work with communities and we stopped when we became government employees
• I understand the difference between sex and gender better
• Did not realise how oppressed women were, it is a big problem
• Nothing can be done in isolation, gender is a gender based violence issue which can be addressed by Local Government, democracy is not understood by ordinary residents so they do not get involved. They are so busy surviving that they do not see the importance of getting this information yet it is very necessary.
