Voter Education Programme for 2009

People need to be informed of their rights and responsibilities within a democracy which includes education on the technical aspects of casting one’s vote. Approaches to such information campaigns often apply a top-down approach with information passed on to potential voters. Having considered this, DDP identified the need to make these educational interventions more interactive and enjoyable.

DDP(Cape Town) & IEC (Western Cape)

DDP’s Cape Town office entered into a contract with the IEC Western Cape in October to co-ordinate all the Civil Society Organisation voter education activities in the Cape Town metro area.

DDP entered into partnership agreements with a number of organizations who have prior experience of voter education work as well as a small team of facilitators from one of DDP’s Western Cape partners, the Don Davis People’s Centre. These teams were then allocated areas within the metro area in which to implement their voter education sessions. Teams were required to do a combination of formal and informal workshops as well as pamphlet drops.

In addition to this, DDP embarked on its own voter education programme which enhanced the IEC programme of education sessions. We engaged a team of actors to do a series of Street Theatre performances in the townships and also employed a group of final year media students from UCT to produce some voter education skits for airing on community radio stations. These will be aired on Bush Radio and Eden FM throughout December 2008.

On the 30th August 2005, the KwaZulu-Natal Democracy and Election Forum (KZNDEF) sub committee on voter education (headed by DDP) finalized its plans in respect of the upcoming local government elections. The rollout had brought on board nine civil society organizations and networks throughout the Province in what is being heralded as one of the largest co-operative efforts of civil society in the Province.
