YMCA youth Imbizo Report :

YMCA / DDP Youth Imbizo

19 - 22 of September 2008 (High Over Wild-life Sanctuary)

The YMCA in collaboration with the DDP convened a youth Imbizo to engage the youth on issues of development and governance. Young people are arguably the most affected by the social calamities that plague our country, like high employment, underemployment, HIV/AIDS. More harrowing, they are generally marginalized from decisions affecting them, or even worse, lack information about their right to participate in public affairs. This has fuelled a ubiquitous culture of passive citizenship amongst the youth. The main purpose of the workshop was thus to assess how young people engage in public affairs.

Youth Day Event

16 June 2008, YMCA, Durban

The Youth Day event, facilitated by the Democracy Development Program (DDP) and the Durban YMCA was aimed at commemorating the pre-historical events of June 16, 1976. Furthermore it was also aimed at reminding the youth of the importance of youth activism and participation in the context of the current challenges and issues facing them in this day in each. This day had to be commemorated from a historical perspective however another primary objective of this event was to openly discuss the adversities that the youth of South Africa are dealing with.

Children’s rights and responsibilities workshop

Children’s rights and responsibilities workshop

Child rights and responsibilities have been a cause of much discussion and debates in recent times. More so with other contemporary contributing factors such as the newly amended laws and acts based specifically on the protection of the needs and best interests of the child. These laws amended in order to include a broader spectrum of issues under child legislation in the context of certain issues affecting children and minors. Some of these factors are: the increase of child headed household due to the scourge of HIV/Aids, increase in violations against children (sexual, physical, verbal abuse, neglect) in the school setting, in the home as well as in the broader society. All these urgent demands highlighted the need for more attention and urgent forms of redress hence, the shift towards intense social awareness of the child in society. The DDP, in partnership with Tongaat library as well as GCIS  also made a concerted effort towards this worthy cause.
