INVITATION TO THE SEMINAR ON THE NATIONAL CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in partnership with the Democracy Development Programme have pleasure in inviting you or a representative from your organisation to attend a LEGISLATIVE BRIEFING SESSION on the new National Consumer Protection Act.

Details of this seminar are as follows -:
Date : Thursday, 21st October 2010
Venue : Diakonia Conference Centre, 21 St Andrews Street,
(now known as Diakonia Ave) Durban
Time : 08h30 – 14h00

The workshop objectives are to -:
 Broaden the understanding of relevant stakeholders on the Act;
 Facilitate better compliance with the legislation by all stakeholders in order to ensure that rights are fulfilled;
 Explore ways in which stakeholders can support each other in the implementation of the Act.
 Identify possible concerns relating to the implementation of the Act;

There have been media reports whereby experts have been quoted registering concerns pertaining to the implementation of the new legislation but most of them stated that one of the primary aims of this legislation is to provide a fair, accessible and sustainable marketplace for businesses and consumers alike. According to these experts the main challenge though was that the public were not aware of this legislation despite the fact that it was primarily aimed at relieving the plight of the poor and vulnerable.

Kindly confirm your availability by completing the attached form and forwarding it to Mdu Sibisi at the SAHRC via email at Msibisi@sahrc.org.za  or telephone/fax 031-3047323 by Friday, 15th October 2010. Please note that space is limited and will be allocated on a first come basis.
