Courageous Conversations

Friday, April 30, 2010, Koinonia, Durban - On the 30th of May Vuleka Trust and the DDP hosted an event called “ Courageous Conversations” at the Koinonia Centre in Hillcrest. The event was the brainchild of Roland Vernon, the Director of Koinonia and was meant to bring people together to share their uniquely South African stories. This was a ‘fruit salad’ gathering in that it brought people together across a spectrum of race, age, gender and culture.

The idea was to open up a space for ordinary South Africans to engage each other about co-creating a different kind of future and also about finding each other as human beings sharing a common destiny.

This, being the first conversation simply demonstrated to people what was possible when people gather to share without judgment or the need to show how smart they are.
A thread that ran through the conversation centered on being aware of our different life stories and how we carry them with us wherever we go. As is usual in these settings there were a lot more questions than answers. We have found the questions to be much more important as they serve to raise our level of consciousness of different possibilities.
