DDP Cape Town Civic Education Project

DDP Cape Town has recently launched an exciting new project. We believe that in order for democracy to work properly, citizens need to be actively engaged with those issues that affect their lives. Many people do not know how to, nor have the resources to access the relevant information or government structures to be able to participate fully in the democratic process.

In addition, many of the current structures that have been established to facilitate citizen participate at a local level simply do not work. This project aims at providing an alternate space for all stakeholders to engage with each other.

The Civic Education Project is based on the belief that communities themselves know best what issues are of concern to them. The project aims to listen to those concerns and then empower communities through information, resources and support to address their concerns.

The project is run by a team of nine trained facilitators who work in various communities within the Western Cape. They are responsible for:

  • Listening to the communities’ concerns by facilitating meetings with relevant stakeholders
  • Strategising with the community about ways in which to address their concerns
  • Accessing relevant information and disseminating this to the communities
  • Providing platforms for discussion and debate
  • Creating links between the relevant stakeholders in order to serve a common interest
