Training Workshop for Civil Society Organizations on Monitoring and Reporting Corruption

10-11 November 2008 (The Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Uganda) - The workshop was organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), New York in collaboration with United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Ethiopia. It falls on the scope of Governance and Public Administration division of UNECA whose aims and objectives are in line with DDP’s core activities, particularly their work on Local Government, hence the acceptance of this invitation.

The workshop was the first of a series of workshops to follow some time next year which according to plans will involve all stakeholders and will extend to other parts of the continent. The aims and objectives of this workshop were to:
  •  Promote effective and responsive CSO’s by advancing their capacity on processes and mechanisms of monitoring and reporting corruption.
  •  Improve the pool of stakeholders in the fight against corruption.
  •  Equip CSO’s with the knowledge and information required to execute the arduous challenge of fighting corruption in Africa in a systematic and methodical way.
26 participants from different states, in particular the South and Eastern parts of Africa attended this workshop. Each country was represented by at least 2 – 3 delegates. South Africa was represented by three people from two provinces, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal. Of the three delegates two were from Johannesburg, Perishaw Camay, Director at CORE and Jennifer Chiringa, Coordinator at Southern Africa Trust and one from KZN, Nompumelelo Shezi, Project Coordinator at Democracy Development Programme.
