Okumhlope High School Workshop
14-16 June 2010 - The DDP schools programme has taken on an alternate approach in developing young people. The focus has moved from developing leaders to developing young community builders moulding their own future. Having started the process in Phoenix with Greenbury Secondary School, an opportunity was extended to Okumhlophe High School in Umlazi. Although lacking the resources, the school has the potential and through this opportunity will engage with the process and programme.
Youth Salt March
Inanda,18 April 2010 - The principles of Mahatma Gandhi and in particular the Salt March are very pertinent to the people of South Africa, especially at this cross-road the country finds itself. Events like the Salt March are necessary to raise the awareness of great people like Mahatma Gandhi and the principles he stood for. As part of our relationship and commitment to the leadership programme with Greenbury Secondary School, we the DDP under took to participate with them in the Gandhi Development Trust Salt March.
Youth Symposium: “Champions of the Child”
19 June 2009, Cape Town Holocaust Centre - It was attended by about 50 learners from former model C schools, townships schools and one special needs school. The programme focussed on workshopping Children’s Rights with the participants as well as a visit to an exhibition on Janusz Korczak - world - renown as a forefather of the children’s rights movement - as well as an exhibition called “visions and voices, rights and realities” - Children in SA.

14 March 2009, Diakonia Centre - The workshop provided a platform for young people to openly express perceptions / views about sex and sexuality, gender and relationship dynamics. The discussions generated cross-generational inputs, as participants comprised both school-going and working youth.
Youth: Leadership and Teambuilding Workshop
Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve, Howick, 6-8 March 2009 - DDP has embarked on extending their school based projects by targeting the Phoenix area. An invitation was sent out to schools in that area to form partnerships in seeing this process through. Two schools took an interest and have agreed to engage their learners with Phase 1 of the project, which was the Leadership and Team-Building camp. Greenbury Secondary School went on camp from 06-08 March 2009 and Woodview Secondary School on the 27-29 March 2009 at Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve under the strict supervision and guidance of DDP Staff and Facilitators.
Youth Racism and Diversity Workshop
Fairvale Secondary School Hall, Wentworth, Durban - DDP partnered with Quinton Kippen and hosted a workshop on Racism and Diversity. This was held in the Durban south basin with 25 Grade 11 learners from Merebank Secondary, Fairvale Secondary, Wentworth Secondary, Umbilo Secondary and Grosvenor Girls. One of the aims of the workshop was to assess whether 14 years later are we truly are Rainbow Nation living in Freedom. The outcome of the workshop was a great success, as the learners were very enthusiastic and supportive of the program and the evaluations proved that the learners fully understood and believed in the workshop.
YMCA / DDP Youth Imbizo.pdf
19 - 22 of September 2008 (High Over Wild-life Sanctuary) - The YMCA in collaboration with the DDP convened a youth Imbizo to engage the youth on issues of development and governance. Young people are arguably the most affected by the social calamities that plague our country, like high employment, underemployment, HIV/AIDS. More harrowing, they are generally marginalized from decisions affecting them, or even worse, lack information about their right to participate in public affairs. This has fuelled a ubiquitous culture of passive citizenship amongst the youth. The main purpose of the workshop was thus to assess how young people engage in public affairs.
Youth Day Event
16 June 2008, YMCA, Durban - The Youth Day event, facilitated by the Democracy Development Program (DDP) and the Durban YMCA was aimed at commemorating the pre-historical events of June 16, 1976. Furthermore it was also aimed at reminding the youth of the importance of youth activism and participation in the context of the current challenges and issues facing them in this day in each. This day had to be commemorated from a historical perspective however another primary objective of this event was to openly discuss the adversities that the youth of South Africa are dealing with.
Children’s rights and responsibilities workshop
Child rights and responsibilities have been a cause of much discussion and debates in recent times. More so with other contemporary contributing factors such as the newly amended laws and acts based specifically on the protection of the needs and best interests of the child. These laws amended in order to include a broader spectrum of issues under child legislation in the context of certain issues affecting children and minors.

DDP - WHOC Initiative
The DDP in partnership with the We Help Our Children (WHOC) embarked on a youth capacity building pilot project whereby workshops were conducted with the aim of empowering youth from the South Durban area. These workshops were held at the Austerville primary school in Wentworth and the target group is made up of grade 10 learners from secondary schools in the area.
