Okumhlope High School Workshop
14-16 June 2010 - The DDP schools programme has taken on an alternate approach in developing young people. The focus has moved from developing leaders to developing young community builders moulding their own future. Having started the process in Phoenix with Greenbury Secondary School, an opportunity was extended to Okumhlophe High School in Umlazi. Although lacking the resources, the school has the potential and through this opportunity will engage with the process and programme.
The workshop had a few basic objectives;
· learners will have a project to work with,
· an understanding of how to make their project a success,
· understand shortfalls to the success of their project and acquire tools to overcome possible
problems that may arise.
The two day workshop proved challenging for most of the learners as many of them had not been away from home. There was wide variety of learners ranging from Grade 8-12 which created an interesting dynamic. Many of these learners never really interacted meaningfully in school and this situation allowed them to interact at different levels creating friendships and relationships amongst themselves.
The learners decided to initiate and work with five projects in their school and community which included; a sports programme, an environmental club, a sing and dance group, career guidance and motivational speakers and a prayer group.
A follow-up session will be necessary to discuss few challenges the learners may face through their
planning.
