Scope of work We examine and analyse issues of democracy, participation and representation, citizenship and rights, development policy and practice and feed into national and global debates. |
Research themes
- Deepening democracy –
looking at how various types of democracies developed and
institutionalized across different contexts. Research
outputs
- Rights and citizenship – analysing meanings and practices of citizenship and gauging perceptions and experiences of rights and citizenship in different contexts.
- Citizenship participation - analysing various approaches to participation and exploring how citizens engage with local, national, regional and international development policy processes. Research outputs

evaluating legislation and policies in terms of its ability to
reduce inequality and poverty. Research

Advocacy and capacity building
We engage local communities in various participatory action research (PAR) projects spanning our research themes. We pursue capacity building initiatives on types of democracy, citizenship and rights and participatory governance in conjunction with a broad swathe of grass roots social groupings, e.g. social movements, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, etc.Research links- Development Research Centre on Citizenship, Participation and Accountability (Citizenship DRC)
